Bridges of the Ironbridge Gorge #25

As I was walking the dog this morning I realised that my last post in the Bridges of the Ironbridge Gorge series was exactly 1 year ago – and I still haven’t finished it. It wasn’t due to lack of interest but just that no matter how hard I looked I just couldn’t see the viewpoint required to get a good shot of the final bridge – the riverbanks either side are just too overgrown. But today, finally, we’ve reached the end of the tour and finish up at the newest bridge of them all – the Free Bridge.

Although the present bridge was only built in 1994 it replaced one that was built to replace a river ferry back in 1909 – and this old bridge was revolutionary because it was made of reinforced concrete. It was also built by local subscription and so didn’t require tolls to be paid to cross it – hence its name.

Unfortunately it was discovered that the concrete was decaying – and this ultimately led to a Bailey bridge being placed over the top in 1987 and then eventually it was demolished and this new bridge was built.

I still haven’t got a full view of the bridge but the design of the new bridge is iconic enough so I don’t think it is required.

So that’s the final image in the Bridges of the Ironbridge Gorge series – and a project that I’ve enjoyed immensely. If you ever feel that your photography is going a bit stale then I can recommend that you find such a project in your own area so that it gives you a reason to get your camera out and experiment with getting a good photograph from a subject that, at first glance, may look uninspiring.
